Hello, I’m Kaylen!

I am a scientific illustrator and communicator based in Ottawa, Canada. I am trained as a biologist through both my undergraduate degree at Queen’s University (Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Biology), and my postgraduate studies at Carleton University (Master of Science in Biology).

Through my scientific illustrations, I strive to kindle the desire for knowledge by using a more approachable format.

As children, there is an innate desire to explore what our world has to offer. There is excitement at every corner and an eagerness to know how our planet works. This same awe exists in each of us as we age, but can get overlooked as the demands of life grow.

I believe that the key to maintaining this interest is by improving the way we portray science and communicate our findings to the general public. The complex methodologies and processes of research can seem out of reach to those without formal training.

My goal is to help inspire this childhood sense of awe towards the unknown by making complex concepts accessible to all. Using a blend of traditional and digital mediums, I produce accurate and beautiful pieces that fully represent science, in all of its forms. With my work, I hope to spark a wonder of science that resonates with the child in all of us.

I am among those who think that science has great beauty.
